Host a Japanese Native Speaker as a Non-salaried Language Teaching Assistant and Cultural Ambassador in Your School
Why JAPEP?
Although there are many similar programs, JAPEP provides much more support for both schools and assistants than other programs. JAPEP selects enthusiastic and outgoing applicants whose English language skills enable them to share their knowledge of Japanese language, culture and contemporary issues.
English Skills & Preparation
All JAPEP teaching assistants have achieved a minimum of Level 2 in the Japanese Education Ministry English Proficiency Test or undertake further training in order to reach this level in Japan or at La Trobe University Language Centre.
All JAPEP assistants attend an in-country residential orientation immediately before placement. The orientation focuses on current Japanese teaching methods and materials, classroom management, seminars with current teachers of Japanese, micro-teaching practice, English communication skills and cross-cultural training.
JAPEP Cares
The JAPEP assistant teacher program provides both host schools and assistants with the highest level of contact and support. JAPEP is in regular contact with the assistants and the schools throughout the stay to ensure that the program runs smoothly.
JAPEP provides host schools with clear program guidelines, a team teaching guide, notes on cultural differences for host families and regular contact.
All JAPEP assistants are encouraged to develop a strong support network with other assistants and JAPEP bilingual staff. This allows problems like culture shock and homesickness to be quickly recognised, and strategies for dealing with any problems can be quickly and effectively put in place.
In Brief
Schools already teaching Japanese can utilize the assistant as an invaluable resource in assisting with pronunciation, cultural information and the compilation of reference materials.
Schools without a language program can offer their students an enjoyable introduction to Japanese language and culture. JAPEP can also provide schools with a Grade 1 to 6 Primary Japanese Curriculum, so that the work started by an assistant can be continued by subsequent assistants.
We hope that your school community will take advantage of this opportunity by completing the application form and we look forward to helping you provide an enriching LOTE program.
Application Deadlines
Our intakes are August and April. Please send your application by the designated deadlines to secure an assistant.
